They awarded the $20,000 prize for the best portrait of a person distinguished in sport, to Lewis Miller for his portrait of Ron Barassi. Miller has frequently exhibited in the Archibald Prize, and in 1998 won the prize with his portrait of Allan Mitelman.
Ron Barassi is an Aussie Rules legend. He has been involved with 17 grand finals during his illustrious five-decade career as a player and coach with Melbourne, Carlton, North Melbourne and Sydney.
