National Photographic Portrait Prize 2017

The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects. The winner for 2017 is

Richard Morecroft & Alison Mackay by Gary Grealy

Two portraits received the Highly Commended Award: Renaissance Rose by John Benavente, and Mastura by Brett Canet-Gibson. The Art Handlers' Award went to Tobias Titz for Bobby Bunungurr. Brett Canet-Gibson also won the People's Choice Award for Trevor Jamieson.

For the 10th anniversary of the National Photographic Portrait Prize, judges Joanna Gilmour (Curator, National Portrait Gallery), Dr Sarah Engledow (Curator, National Portrait Gallery) and George Fetting (guest judge, photographer) selected 49 portraits from nearly 3000 entries. We thank everyone who submitted photographs for the Prize.
