Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist
Having studied New Wave cinema at art school and read The Best Film I Never Made, I began my journey to persuade Bruce Beresford to sit for a portrait. After a year of emails, including enthusing his producer Sue Milliken, he rather reluctantly accepted. At our first meeting I asked him how I should paint the portrait, and he answered with a laugh: ‘You're the artist – however you want!’ Overwhelmed to be holding the creative reins at first, I managed to calm down and get on with the job. This is one of my many paintings of the director, now a mentor and friend.
